The Problem With Most Fashion Jewelry

Here's something the jewelry industry doesn't always advertise clearly: a significant amount of fashion jewelry, especially at lower price points, contains nickel and sometimes lead. These metals are cheap, widely available, and commonly used in ear posts, clasps, and findings. For a lot of people, they cause no reaction at all. But for those with metal sensitivities, they can cause real discomfort. Redness, itching, swelling, and in some cases infection.

Nickel is actually one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis. Studies suggest that anywhere from 10 to 20 percent of the population has some level of nickel sensitivity. Lead, while less
common in consumer jewelry than it once was, still appears in some imported pieces and poses its own health concerns especially with prolonged skin contact.

Why This Became Personal for Me

When I started making jewelry, I was my own test subject. I'd make a pair of earrings, put them in, and wear them for a full day to see how my skin responded. What I found was that the quality of the ear post made an enormous difference. Cheap posts left my ears irritated. Better hardware didn't.

From that point on, I made a decision that has never changed: every single pair of ENORAH earrings uses lead-free and nickel-free ear posts. No exceptions. When I can, I use sterling silver or gold-filled posts, materials that are gentler on skin and longer lasting.
